Resection of a Rib for Abscess of Right Lung—Recovery

vib, into which the probe passes to the extent of 13 inches in a direction to the right upwards, outwards and forwards towards the front of the thorax and in front of the right axilla. On passing the probe a discharge of dark foetid pus oozes out through the sinus. The impact of the probe in the front of the thorax can be felt against the third rib just in front of the right axilla. Has slight fever, pulse quick and feeble, tongue pale and flabby. The patient was detained in hospital, and the sinus washed out daily with mercury lotion and dressed with carbolic oil and iodoform locally. Good nourishing food was given him to husband his strength and prepare him for the operation of resection of a rib which it was thought might be necessary, if the above treatment proved of no avail.
